About us

Czarne is an independent publishing house that specialises in reportage and non-fiction, as well as prose fiction of the highest quality.

It was founded in 1996 by the award-winning authors Monika Sznajderman and Andrzej Stasiuk – important figures in Polish culture and literature, whose books have been translated into many languages.
Czarne  publishes around 80 titles per year. Across more than 25 years of operation, it has published books by authors from dozens of different countries, making it one of the leading Polish publishers of foreign literature.
The series that we publish (e.g. Reportage, The American Series, Sulina, Biographies) set down a marker of quality on the Polish publishing market. They are both recognisable and valued by critics and readers alike.
We publish books by winners of the most important international literary awards, including the Nobel Prize in Literature, the Booker Prize, the Pulitzer Prize, the PEN America Literary Awards, the Baillie Gifford Prize, the European Union Prize for Literature and many more.
Our Polish-language authors also regularly receive the most prestigious Polish book awards, such as the Nike Literary Award, the Polityka Passport, the Ryszard Kapuściński Award, the Angelus Central European Literature Award, the Gdynia Literary Prize and the Kościelski Award, among others.
Numerous prizes have also been awarded to many of our translators.
Our literature in translation includes works by Svetlana Alexievich, Herta Müller, Bob Dylan, William Dalrymple, Barbara Demick, Jean Hatzfeld, Haruki Murakami, V. S. Naipaul, Amos Oz, Martin Pollack, Ed Vulliamy, Liao Yiwu and many other outstanding writers, excellent journalists and respected scientists, world-famous names and promising debutants.
In 2017, Czarne was honoured with The London Book Fair International Excellence Award for “demonstrating a fearless approach to non-fiction publishing, passionately giving a voice to minorities and the politically or racially persecuted.”
Our mission is to publish extraordinary international voices, offering readers the chance to encounter other lives and other points of view via the language of the imagination.
We publish books that tackle the key problems of the contemporary world, are socially engaged and deal with the most salient issues.
Our books are characterised by consistently high editorial standards. They are translated and edited by the most distinguished specialists, and at each stage our authors are accompanied by a team of genuine experts and lovers of literature.
